Fun learning activities for kids

Your little one will probably now be starting to read independently, but games and activities are still a fun way to help with phonic skills, word recognition and developing that all-important vocabulary.

Your child may become more aware of signs, notices, posters, newspaper headlines, TV adverts, and so on… so make the most of this new reading opportunity! This also helps to reinforce why learning to read is so important. Try some of our fun math games and activities with your child to practice their numeracy skills, build confidence, and support what they are learning at school.

Games and activities

  1. Word puzzles: Word puzzles include games like crosswords, word searches, and anagrams. Older research suggests crosswords may help delay the onset of memory loss in early dementia, specifically by building up the neural pathways in your brain that help you retain knowledge.

2. Listening Games: Examples of active listening include making eye contact and using open body language to show engagementAsking open-ended questions, paraphrasing what the speaker said to confirm understanding, and using short verbal affirmations like “I see” or “that makes sense”

3. Phonics games are interactive activities that teach children the relationship between letters and the sounds they make, helping them decode words and build a foundation for reading

Word Roller

You’ll need a ball and a set of alphabet flashcards for this activity. Flip over a flashcard and roll the ball to your child. Your child then has to name a word that begins with that sound. They can then roll the ball back to you or another parent/sibling who has to say another word that starts with that same letter. Do this a few times with one letter before switching to the next.

Books To Study

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Harry Potter has no idea how famous he is. That’s because he’s being raised by his miserable aunt and uncle who are terrified Harry will learn that he’s really a wizard, just as his parents were. But everything changes when Harry is summoned to attend an infamous school for wizards, and he begins to discover some clues about his illustrious birthright. From the surprising way he is greeted by a lovable giant, to the unique curriculum and colorful faculty at his unusual school, Harry finds himself drawn deep inside a mystical world he never knew existed and closer to his own noble destiny.

Charlotte’s Web

This beloved book by E. B. White, author of Stuart Little and The Trumpet of the Swan, is a classic of children’s literature that is “just about perfect.” This high-quality paperback features vibrant illustrations colorized by Rosemary Wells!

Danny the Champion of the World

Danny’s life seems perfect: his home is a gypsy caravan, he’s the youngest car mechanic around, and his best friend is his dad, who never runs out of wonderful stories to tell. And when Danny discovers his father’s secret, he’s off on the adventure of a lifetime. Here’s Roald Dahl’s famous story about a 9-year-old boy, his dad, and a daring and hilarious pheasant-snatching expedition. Just as important, it’s the story of the love between a boy and his father who, in Danny’s own words, is “the most marvelous and exciting father a boy ever had.”
